Diesel exhaust is a compound mix of gasses and fine particles. Diesel fuel emits several dangerous emissions when it is burned.
Diesel fuelled automobiles are the chief sources of harmful pollutants in the atmosphere. Various health studies have assertively claimed that diesel engines can have serious health dangers. Exposure to diesel exhaust largely disturbs the respiratory system and leads to asthma, allergies & bronchitis and deteriorates functions of lungs. Though everyone is vulnerable to diesel pollution, people with pre-existing respiratory issues are more susceptible to these harmful particles. High exposure to diesel exhausts has increased heart problems, premature deaths, and lung cancer.
Keeping in mind the threat of diesel exhaust, modern cars have to be fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to stop this soot from passing into the air. Moreover, the government has made diesel particulate filter check mandatory for diesel cars and trucks.
Why is DPF necessary and beneficial for the atmosphere?
Diesel vehicles have gained a lot of popularity throughout the world because of the advancement in diesel engine technology. Diesel cars give excellent fuel economy over petrol vehicles.
Since diesel cars emit a high amount of NOx and particulate emissions when juxtaposed to petrol cars, many green initiatives were introduced by vehicles manufacturers to minimize pollution. Out of the many green initiatives, the introduction of diesel particulate filters was considered to be one of the most significant initiatives.
When diesel is burned in a combustion engine, it produces large amounts of soot that is released in the exhaust. Soot particles are a by-product of the diesel exhaust that forms the primary cause of pollution in the atmosphere. It is compulsory to eradicate the soot particles for a smooth performance of the car and green environment.
The catalytic converters fixed in all vehicles are not adequate to make the harmful gases safe and eco-friendly. For this reason, DPFs have become a legal requirement. These devices eliminate soot from the exhaust of a diesel engine and help in averting the release of the dangerous particles into the atmosphere. The particles get trapped in the filter and are further emptied on a regular basis to sustain the performance of the automobile.
The process of cleaning the DPF is known as regeneration. The regeneration method has three types – active, passive and forced. The collected soot is burnt off at a high temperature and leaves behind only a residue of ash. With efficient regeneration process, the DPF is ready to take on more pollution from the diesel engine.
In case, the regeneration process is not conducted properly, the soot will get accumulated, impacting the performance of the vehicle and leading to costly repairs. Many diesel car owners prefer deleting or removing the DPFs to escape expensive repair & replacement and increase the engine performance. However, one must never forget that removing, bypassing or modifying DPFs has both legal and social repercussions.
